Of the great many illusions which have been presented over the years the act of levitating a human being has remained the most entrancing and talked-about illusion of all time. There is nothing as puzzling, as challenging or as beautiful as a girl floating freely in mid-air and remaining there under the magician’s control. Every great magician has featured the levitation - Thurston, Dante, Blackstone, Kalanag, Sorcar, Mark Wilson, Doug Henning, David Copperfield and, of course, many many others.

Closely related to the levitation are various illusions in which a person is suspended in mid-air with little or no support at all. Some of the best-known illusions in this class are the Broom Suspension, the Flying Carpet, the Ultra Modern Suspension and the Super- X Levitation. These illusions require less apparatus and space and are more suitable to small stages and nightclub conditions. Even though they are not as fascinating as the full-fledged floating levitations, they still head the list as the most exciting illusions in most nightclub and feature magic acts.

In response to the great demand for comprehensive and accurate information concerning levitations and suspensions we are proud to offer you this gigantic encyclopedia which has taken several years to complete. It supplies answers to hundreds of questions that have been raised by professional and amateur magicians who are searching for an ideal levitation. This book provides a complete selection of all known methods, enabling the ambitious performer to select the levitation or suspension best suited to his individual needs.

In addition, S. H. Sharpe has given you a complete chronology of the levitation, covering its history from the earliest recorded account (1355) to modern times. Entries of concurrent political, social and intellectual history have been interspersed to provide the reader with a historical background to the evolution of the levitation. Illustrated by Sid Lorraine. Edited by Bruce Armstrong.
